I have yet to find someone who enjoys going trials. It is not something that people look forward to, but something to avoid instead. So when hard times come there is always the question, "Why did God let this happen?" or "If God is so powerful, then why does bad things happen to me?" Those are very good questions. I used to think the same way. James 1:2-4 says, "Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything."
What this verse is saying is, we should be happy when tragedy happens. Because when something terrible happens we need to grow closer to God. God lets these things happen because He knows we CAN get out of these times of sorrow, and when we do get out we should be closer to God. Example: some people in the summer time stop watering their grass for a little bit. We know that without water your grass will die. But what you might not have known is, that when your grass starts to brown the roots grow deeper in the ground. Which will help the grass in the long run. So I bet if grass could speak it would say, "Water me!!! I need water!!!" But we are thinking, "This does have a purpose and will help you later grass." So there is a reason for everything, even if we do not know it. We are like the grass thinking, "Why is God not watering me? I need water!" While God is thinking, "I do have a reason for not watering you."
